Sanfa and Moosa

Set in the time of the southern uprising, this tale of love and loyalty tells the story of Sanfa and Moosa. The beautiful waif-like Sanfa lives in the northernmost atoll of the Maldivian archipelago while Moosa, the daring seafarer, is from the southernmost atoll. A chance encounter between these two young people results in love at first sight and dreams of building a life together. But, as with all classic love stories, Sanfa and Moosa face many obstacles in their attempts to fulfill their dreams.

Moosa, caught in the political secessionist movement in Addu at the time, faces challenge after challenge in his attempts to return to his lady love and to make her his own. In her own island, meanwhile, Sanfa fights her own battles in realizing her dreams of becoming Moosa’s bride. She challenges cultural traditions of arranged marriages and courageously goes against family and social pressures on young women of the time.

When Moosa finally returns to wed the love of his life, he is too late. Sanfa has died a tragic death. Grief stricken and broken hearted, Moosa mourns for the woman of his dreams, refusing to move away from her tomb. In the months that he stays there, on the uninhabited island of Fusfaru where Sanfa is buried, the truth behind her death and the circumstances that led to the tragedy are revealed.

The story ends with Moosa’s own death and burial next to Sanfa’s grave, with the locals renaming the island of Fusfaru as Loabinfaru (or Lovers’ Island), where the spirits of the two lovers are said to be seen walking on the beach holding hands, together for eternity. Intertwining the themes of jealousy, family, loyalty, love and betrayal, this tragic romance depicts how love transcends death, and ultimately succeeds all.
